The function, operation and employment of EO systems use a similar thread across military, law enforcement and civilian operators. With customer consultation, the courses can be delivered to satisfy end user training needs whether they operate fixed or rotary wing platforms, or if the EO systems are being used on ground or maritime vehicles. With the ever-expanding field of UAV operations, the benefits of training for both the system operator and weapons officer can be catered for.
Electro-Optic and Infrared (EO/IR)
The theory of EO/IR course is designed to explain a functional theory of EO and IR and the impact on the performance of the sensor. The knowledge gained will inform the operator and tasking officers to the limitations of the sensor and how the time of day and environmental conditions can impact a task. Equally, the course considers what can be done to mitigate problems should they be encountered during the mission. The second element to the course is the practical use of EO and IR and includes IR effects which allow the operator to compile a statement of activity of the target. It will also instruct the operator on the analysis of Full Motion Video images and what they can and cannot expect from their sensor.
Practical Functionality of a System
Full system functionality can be delivered and consolidated using the AeroSimulators’ Gimbal Imaging System Trainer (GIST). When delivered by experienced operators, the students receive more operator relevant knowledge of the system’s functionality. This can be delivered prior to the arrival of the live system and will allow the operator to become familiar with the controls and functions of the system whilst developing muscle memory of the controller. This ground based training ensures that the operator is comfortable operating the system prior to operating in the aircraft and will undoubtedly produce a saving in flying hours.
Operational Mission Training
Operational Mission Training is designed to educate the operator on how to use the system once its functionality has been learnt. The training covers a combination of theory and practical exercises on the missions the operator is most commonly employed in. There is a wide spectrum of missions that a unit can be exposed to, and here the experience of the instructors can inform the operators and tasking officers as to what to expect and how to deal with a developing situation. All the practical scenarios are tailored to the mission profile of the customer.
Scenario Construction Training/Delivery
The training delivery is a combination of theory and practice with the practical element delivered on the GIST. The key to the success of the GIST is to ensure that it is integrated into the customer’s training regime and, in turn, requires convincing scenarios that are representative of the customer’s mission profile. We provide training in how to construct realistic and relevant scenarios using VR Forces and X-Plane. However, if the unit does not have the personnel or time to construct them, we will build scenarios to their requirements.
Training can be provided on associated equipment such as mapping systems, lasers and downlink to ensure that this equipment is used to optimal effect.
Should the existing courses not cover the customer’s specific requirements, or if additional elements need to be added, our experienced staff can design bespoke training to match any training requirement, from basic ab initio training to fully assessed continuation training for the front line operator. The training design is not limited to the EO/IR system operator; after consultation with the customer, training programs can be constructed for the maintenance staff, pilots operating with the system and the command and control teams.
Training is supported for many systems and each course will be delivered to the customer’s requirements. However, if the customer has yet to define their training requirements, ASG Sensor Academy can, in consultation with the customer, propose a training profile. The customer will be provided with a Training Performance Statement (TPS) which outlines the training to be covered.
