The AATD Advanced Aviation Training Device is based on most popular any given helicopter model. It features not only a completely representative cockpit and flight controls, but possibly the largest field of view display system in any simulator under $500,000.
Visual System
At 170° horizontally by 75° vertically, and with detailed scenery, the visual system permits flight manoeuvres to be taught, as well as providing a compelling way to teach flight in poor visibility and transition from VFR flying to IFR. The visual system far exceeds the FAA requirements for Flight Training Devices, but is essential for quality training. The AATD has a complete IFR instrument panel, with a worldwide database of navigation aids.
Instructor Station
The instructor station is immediately behind the cockpit, permitting the instructor an unimpeded view of the visual system and instrument panel. The instructor also has complete control over the flight via dual monitors and a touchpad tablet PC.
To assist in IFR training, the OCRA eye-tracking system is installed as standard. This innovative device has already proven its worth for monitoring instrument cross-check and is currently exclusively available only from Aerosimulators.
Environment
The AATD is installed in a climate controlled, highly mobile trailer, so there is no need to build separate facilities or modify existing space. All that is needed is a place to park and electrical power. Using a trailer means that the training can be given, wherever the need arises. This without expensive pilot transport and unavailability costs.
Authorized Use
An Advanced ATD may be approved by AFS-800 and authorized for use in accomplishing certain regulatory tasks/manoeuvres and/or procedures as applicable under 14 CFR parts 61 and 141 as follows:
Part 61
The FTD must have been evaluated, qualified, and approved by the Administrator.
- Private : 2.5 out of 40 hours flight time
- Instrument : 20 out of 40 hours instrument time
- Commercial : up to 50 out of 250 total flight time
- ATP : Not more than 25 out of 75 instrument time - 1500 total time
- Portions of Instrument Check Ride - Only the maneuvers approved within the PTS
- All 6 approaches required for Instrument Currency
- All or part of the Instrument Proficiency Check (a.k.a.: ICC)
Part 141
The FTD must have been evaluated, qualified, and approved by the Administrator.
- Private : 15% (5.25) out of 35 hours flight training
- Instrument : 40% (14) out of 35 hours instrument training
- Commercial : 20% (24) out of 120 hours flight training
- ATP : 25% (6.25) out of 25 hours flight training
- CFI : 5% (1.25) out of 25 hours flight training
- CFII : 5% (.75) out of 15 hours flight training
- Portions of Instrument Check Ride - Only the maneuvers approved within the PTS
The AATD is probably the most interesting flight training device for a part 135 operator that wants to train its pilots in house. He basically can do the same training as with a FTD level 6/7 but doesn’t have that high approval standard and is not allowed to train other part 135 operators. As with the FNPT II in Europe, the AATD has the best ROI of all FTD's.
